Once the Heart of Darkness emerges, it corrupts the entire realm with a consuming Darkness. Prolonged exposure to the Darkness will cause your maximum Health to degrade.
Returning to safe, light areas created by Light Beacons, the Amplifier, or the Light of the Sanctum will quickly reverse the effects of Darkness on your maximum Health. Picking up Light Orbs dropped by enemies and released from Caches of Light will also partially restore you.The game's own text DataminedCodex.Nightfall.Darkness
