Dark Tears are manifestations of the Heart of Darkness scattered throughout the realm that conceal pockets of the Sanctum’s Light. Attempting to seal a Dark Tear will cause it to defend itself. Overcome these challenges to seal the Dark Tear and release the Sanctum’s Light that is used to power the Amplifier.
Successfully sealing a Dark Tear will leave behind a Remnant; these conduits to the Heart of Darkness will enable you to increase your rewards for the remainder of the run by applying Curses to the Heart. Beware, as these Curses will also weaken your own abilities while empowering enemies you encounter.The game's own text DataminedCodex.Nightfall.Tears
